A Mother’s Journey

    By Patty Jacobs

A belly full of baby, I no longer see my feet.
A belly full of tiny hands, tickling like butterflies so sweet.
A belly full of wriggly feet, that press against my ribs.
And dance the tango with disregard, for what lies below my hips.

A belly full of baby, she sleeps from noon to four.
A belly full of elbows, when darkness falls, I rest no more.
A belly full of wonder, not yet formally introduced.
Till one day all the rolling stops and the flow of life waters ensue.

A belly full of baby, squeezed and gently hugged.
A belly full of baby, descending, burning, stretching, tugged.
A belly full of baby, fits within her daddy’s hand.
Meant to bake a few weeks more, early arrival was unplanned.

A belly full of baby, comes late to greet big brother.
A belly full of baby, who will someday call me mother.
A belly full of memories, reaching arms and leaking breasts
Our bodies intertwine, tiny fingers, smaller toes to lovingly caress.

A belly full of baby, my body forever marked and changed.
With the telltale signs of motherhood, no turning back, life rearranged.
My journey is not unique, yet unpredictable, and who knew
That a belly full of baby would bring us all together. Happy Mother’s Day to you!
