Breastfeeding USA Directors Condemn the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol Building

The mission of Breastfeeding USA is to provide evidence-based breastfeeding information and support, and to promote breastfeeding as the biological and cultural norm. The legislation debated and passed by the US. Congress on the floors of the U.S. Capitol building has a direct impact on the ability of Breastfeeding USA to accomplish its mission.

The insurrection of January 6,1 during which a violent mob of supporters of President Donald Trump breached police barricades, broke down doors and windows of the Capitol building, and illegally entered during a joint session of Congress, was an assault on lawmakers and a desecration of the place where laws are made. We condemn this action as a direct threat to democracy and the legislative process, a process that has been and will continue to be used to protect and promote American families’ access to breastfeeding support. Because our work involves advocating for equity and anti-racism in all segments of our population, we condemn white supremacy and the ongoing efforts to overturn a duly certified election and incite violence. Breastfeeding USA continues to commit ourselves to the ongoing work of promoting better access to lactation care and reducing health disparities for all.
